THE UNIVERSITY will suspend classes and office work on May 9 and 10 to encourage Thomasians to participate in the 2022 national and local elections.

“As responsible citizens, all members of the Thomasian community who are eligible to exercise their right of suffrage are enjoined to actively participate in the 2022 national and local elections on May 9, 2022,” UST Secretary General Fr. Louie Coronel O.P. said in a circular.

“Considering the sacredness of our votes and our participation in the electoral process, let us dutifully and wisely exercise our right to vote for the sake of the common good of the Filipino nation,” he added.

Coronel also cited Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis in saying that citizens should actively “promote the common good,” and that responsible citizenship is a virtue and participation in political life is a moral obligation.

Several groups and members of the Thomasian community have endorsed Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan for president and vice president. The Robredo-Pangilinan tandem also topped the Varsitarian’s presidential and vice-presidential surveys.

The Philippines has 65.7 million registered voters for the 2022 elections, 56 percent of which are aged 18 to 41 years old.
