Nutrition junior dies of encephalitis at 23

Nutrition junior Francis Justine Aldaba, who was actively involved in UST student organizations, died of encephalitis or inflammation of the brain on Jan. 14. He was 23.

Aldaba’s death was announced by his brother, Francis, in a Facebook post.

According to Francis, his brother was “misdiagnosed” with bipolar disorder on Dec. 27.

“But when he had seizures, it was clear that it was not a psychological problem,” Francis told the Varsitarian.

Aldaba was the interim executive vice president of the UST Student Organizations Coordinating Council (SOCC).

He was also a coordinator for an organization that campaigns for Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s presidency at his hometown in Nueva Ecija.

Former SOCC interim president Rome Voltaire Gomez, who was a friend of Aldaba, described the student leader as a visionary.

“He always pushes for the best interest of students and student organizations [and] is very dedicated to what he does and works very hard until he accomplishes it,” Gomez told the Varsitarian.

The Central Student Council, where Aldaba was a member, paid tribute to the junior.

“We invite everyone to pray for the soul of Francis Justin Aldaba, a son, friend, student, and leader. You have been one of the greatest sources of inspiration and courage during your stay in the council and the university,” it said.

A funeral service for Aldaba was held on Jan. 14 at Funeraria Coronel Memorial Chapel. His remains will be brought to Adriano Cemetery in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
