Faculty members named outstanding professionals in medtech, chem eng’g

THE PROFESSIONAL Regulation Commission (PRC) has named two UST faculty members among the outstanding professionals of 2021.

Asst. Prof. Roberto Manaois and Prof. Philipina Marcelo were given the 2021 Outstanding Professional Award, the highest award given by the PRC, for their contributions in medical technology and chemical engineering, respectively. 

“This award will just be the beginning of more endeavors of sharing and succession planning,” Manaois told the Varsitarian.

Manaois is a faculty member of the UST Department of Medical Technology and the Lyceum of the Philippines.

He is president and CEO of Scientific Biotech Specialties, Inc, a distributor of in vitro diagnostic products.

He finished his bachelor’s degree in medical technology at the Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation.

In 2013, Manaois earned his master’s in business administration from the Ateneo de Manila University. He obtained his doctorate in business administration from San Beda University, summa cum laude.

In 2021, Manaois was appointed chair of the professional development committee of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists.

Marcelo is the dean of the Faculty of Engineering but is on leave for her Hubert Humphrey Fellowship in the United States.

Marcelo graduated from the University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. She finished her master’s in chemical engineering at the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 1994.

In 2008, Marcelo took her doctorate in food science at Cornell University.

Under Marcelo, six departments were certified by local and international agencies. 

The faculty also began dual-degree programs in civil and metallurgical engineering with the Catholic University of America and Curtin University, respectively. Christine Joyce Paras
