Diokno, Hontiveros, De Lima top UST Varsitarian senatorial survey

LAWYER Chel Diokno is the most preferred candidate of Thomasians for senator in the 2022 elections, results of a Varsitarian survey showed.

Diokno topped the student publication’s senatorial survey, garnering the support of 92.6 percent of the respondents. Diokno also topped the midterm elections survey of the Varsitarian and The Flame in 2019.

He was followed by Senators Risa Hontiveros and Leila de Lima, who mustered 87.4 and 72.7 percent, respectively.

Former representatives Neri Colmenares and Teddy Baguilat claimed the fourth and fifth spots, getting 69.4 and 68 percent, respectively.

Former senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Antonio Trillanes IV placed sixth and seventh in the survey, notching 65.1 and 61.2 percent, respectively.

Lawyer Alex Lacson placed eighth with 53.6 percent.

Sen. Richard Gordon, chair of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee that probed the government’s procurement of medical supplies from Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corp., placed ninth, obtaining 53.5 percent.

Lawyer and labor leader Sonny Matula ranked 10th with 48.9 percent.

Completing the top 12 were Senators Joel Villanueva, a UST College of Commerce alumnus, and Juan Miguel Zubiri, who obtained 40.9 and 38.2 percent, respectively.

Eleven of the 12 candidates under Vice President Maria Lenor “Leni” Robredo and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan’s senatorial lineup ranked in the survey. The only omission was former vice president Jejomar Binay, who ranked 20th with 20.7 percent.

Colmenares, part of the 1Sambayan opposition coalition’s senatorial slate, has endorsed Robredo’s candidacy for president.

The Varsitarian conducted the survey via Google Forms from Feb. 20 to Mar. 20, 2022, with 4,401 Thomasians participating. It has a ±1.7 percent margin of error at a 98.3 percent confidence level.

The survey used a randomized cluster sampling method wherein students were randomly selected based on the determined sample size for each college, faculty, or institute.

Eighty-one percent of the respondents were registered voters, of whom 68 percent will be first-time voters in the upcoming polls.

First-year students who completed the survey comprised 22.3 percent of the total respondents; sophomores, 23.2 percent; juniors, 24.5 percent; seniors, 21.5 percent; fifth-year students, 1.1 percent; and postgraduates, 7.4 percent.

Eighteen faculties, colleges, and institutes participated in the survey.
