A THOMASIAN journalist has been awarded a $100,000 scholarship by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Japan’s Nikkei, Inc.
Prinz Magtulis, a UST journalism alumnus and former Varsitarian managing editor, won the Columbia-Nikkei scholarship, awarded annually since 2017 to a student living in Asia who has an interest in data journalism or business and economics.
“Professionally, I’ve been a beat reporter and an editor. While here, I’m learning new skills beyond writing like computer programming that aids your reporting, especially data reporting. I would really want to land a role that helps me harness these new data skills,” Magtulis told the Varsitarian.
Magtulis, who joined the UST journalism faculty roster in 2020, is finishing his master’s degree in data journalism at Columbia University.
Magtulis had served as a researcher for the Financial Times and worked as a reporter for The Philippine Star and BusinessWorld. He was also a business news editor for Philstar.com.
In 2016, he was named finance reporter of the year by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines.
Magtulis obtained his bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University in 2010. In 2015, he obtained his master’s degree in public administration at the Catholic University of Korea.
Once he completes his master’s degree, Magtulis said he would go back to teaching.
Magtulis is the second Filipino to receive the Columbia-Nikkei scholarship, after Filipina Francesca Rose Regalado, a Japan-based reporter who specializes in investigative journalism and the first recipient of the scholarship.
