APOSTOLIC nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown will lead UST’s Misa de Apertura, the opening Mass that signals the start of the new academic year, on Aug. 2 at the Santisimo Rosario Parish Church.

According to an Office of the Secretary General circular, the event will only be attended in person by members of the University’s Academic Senate, Dominican fathers and invited guests.

The Discurso de Apertura, or the lecture delivered by a professor for the opening of classes, will be given by Medicine Dean Asst. Prof. Ma. Lourdes Maglinao.

Her speech is titled, “Leading Change in a 150-year-old Medical School: Overcoming the Challenges of a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) World amidst the 21st-century Pandemic.”

The theme of the academic discourse is in line with the 150th anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery being celebrated this year.

Both the Mass and lecture will be broadcast live via the University’s official Facebook page on Aug. 2 at 9 a.m.

General freshmen orientation activities will be held from Aug. 4 to 5. The traditional Thomasian Welcome Walk, which will be held virtually for the second year, is scheduled for Aug. 5.

Classes will resume through “enhanced virtual mode” on Aug. 9. Christine Joyce Paras
