Provincial to lead Mass as UST marks 800th year of St. Dominic’s ‘dies natalis’

THE UNIVERSITY will hold a Eucharistic celebration honoring the eighth centenary of St. Dominic’s death on Monday, May 24.

Head of the Filipino Dominicans and UST Vice Chancellor Fr. Filemon Dela Cruz, Jr., O.P., will lead Mass at the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Church, which will be streamed live on the University’s official Facebook page.

Classes from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 24 will be suspended.

The Mass will have the theme “A Table With St. Dominic,” the same as the theme of the jubilee year for St. Dominic’s 800th dies natalis (death anniversary), set by the Master of the Order of Preachers, Fr. Gerard Timoner III, O.P.

St. Dominic, also known as St. Dominic of Calaruega or St. Dominic de Guzmán, is the founder of the Order of the Preachers.

He is the patron saint of astronomers, astronomy, the falsely accused and the Dominican Republic.

He was born in Calaruega, Spain in 1170, and dedicated his life and spiritual mission to promote morality and combat heresy.

In July 1215, he was granted permission to form his own religious order, later called the “Order of the Preachers,” by Pope Honorius III.

He died on Aug. 6, 1221, after a short fever, surrounded by his fellow brother Dominicans.

He was canonized on July 13, 1234 by Pope Gregory IX, with his feast day celebrated every Aug. 8.
