First day of student polls postponed due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’

THE UST Central Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday postponed the first day of this year’s student council elections due to what it said were “unforeseen circumstances.”

The polls were initially scheduled for May 10 to 15, excluding May 13.

“The Commission regrets to announce that the first day of elections will be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Stay tuned for updates and announcements,” the Comelec said in an announcement. It did not elaborate on the reason behind the postponement.

Under the UST Students’ Election Code of 2011, postponement of elections is allowed but it should be announced not later than five school days from the supposed date of election and not later than three days after the cessation of the cause of such postponement of elections.

The postponement must also be rooted in a “serious cause” such as “violence, loss or destruction of election paraphernalia or records, force majeure and/or other analogous causes of such nature.”

The Varsitarian sought the Comelec for an explanation on the postponement but it has yet to respond as of posting. It also has yet to announce if the elections would resume tomorrow, May 11.

This year’s CSC polls will be conducted via the Zoom virtual meeting platform using an electronic voting system. Jamilah Angco
