THE UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies (CCWLS) will hold the inaugural Sulat Tomasino, an invitational creative writing workshop, on Feb. 3 to 5.
The three-day workshop will be held via Zoom.
Sulat Tomasino will open on Feb. 3 with a literary history lecture by Prof. Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, UST CCWLS director, followed by a lecture on writing book reviews by UST Publishing House Director Ma. Ailil Alvarez and a creative nonfiction workshop spearheaded by panelists Assoc. Prof. Nerisa del Carmen Guevara, Asst. Prof. Dawn Marie Nicole Marfil and Prof. John Jack Wigley.
The second day will feature a lecture on fiction writing by Prof. Augusto Antonio Aguila and a fiction workshop headed by Asst. Prof. Joselito de los Reyes and Asst. Prof. Chuckberry Pascual.
A lecture on milieu by de los Reyes and a creative nonfiction lecture by Marfil will close the event.
Pascual, coordinator of Sulat Tomasino, said Sulat Tomasino was established to replace the annual Thomasian Undergraduate Writers’ Workshop.
“Ang iba sa Sulat Tomasino, mas focused kami sa genre per year… ‘Yung workshop session din ngayon ay iba sa karaniwang pag-deliver ng workshop,” he told the Varsitarian.
“[Ngayon] mayroon nang sample text, at iyon ang tatalakayin sa workshop session. Lesson siya sa pagsulat at sa pagki-critique at the same time. ‘Yung lectures din sa fiction at creative nonfiction ay focused sa craft at sa mismong writing practice ng lecturer/writer,” he added.
The first edition of Sulat Tomasino is invitational, but de los Reyes said the event could be made available to the public in the future.
“Sa mga darating na taon, maaari na sigurong makonsidera ang maging bukas sa public ang lecture-workshop lalo’t online naman,” he told the Varsitarian.
Invited publications include The Varsitarian, The Flame, the UST College of Science Journal, the UST College of Accountancy Journal, the UST Angelicum College and the Dominican Studentate.
