COLEGIO de San Juan de Letran in Manila will commemorate its 400th anniversary with a relief drive dubbed “Tulong Letranista” for the victims of recent typhoons on Nov. 24.
“As we forego synchronous classes and student submissions, we shall focus our efforts and energies in sharing our blessings and helping our fellow Filipinos, especially those who have been severely affected by the recent typhoons,” Letran said in a Facebook post.
Tulong Letranista will be held at the Letran campus in Intramuros.
Letran was founded in 1620 as a school for orphans. It later became a secondary school, producing future Philippine presidents Emilio Aguinaldo, Manuel Quezon, Sergio Osmeña and Jose Laurel.
Saints have also come out of Letran’s portals, including the martyrs Vicente Liem de la Paz of Vietnam and Tomas Hioji of Japan.
Letran prepared a series of online festivities for “Colegio Day,” including an online zumba session and an e-sports tournament. It has yet to announce the new dates for Colegio Day activities.
On Nov. 18, the Dominican-run institution started an online campaign where students, faculty and alumni shared photos and messages on the college’s social media wall using the #Letran400 hashtag.
Earlier this year, Letran opened its quadricentennial celebrations with a procession of the image of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila around Intramuros.
On Feb. 28, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 908, which declared 2020 as the “Year for the Celebration of the Quadricentennial Anniversary of the Colegio de San Juan de Letran.”
